a paternity action can be commenced either by the
mother or suspected father, and sometimes even by the
child.   Its purpose is to determine parentage of a
child so that parental rights and responsibilities can
ultimately be allocated with respect to the child.
Generally, once the paternity action is commenced, a
genetic test is conducted on samples of saliva
painlessly taken from the mother, the child and the
suspected father.   If the test indicates that the
suspected father is the biological father, then the
case proceeds to a determination of child support and
other rights and obligations.   The father can be held
responsible not only for on-going child support but
also, in some instances, for support dating back
retroactively to the date of the child's birth, with
credit for support he has actually provided during
that time.

If the suspected father is found not to have been
the biological father, then the matter is concluded as
to him.

A suspected father has the option of admitting
paternity without the necessity of genetic testing.
